Threads VS Twitter: Lessons for both Small and Large Businesses

I woke up to the Threads buzz and it left me wondering if Mark Zuckerberg had discussed this prior to its Launch! In this audacious battle between two technology giants, Twitter and Thread, I see profound lessons for all businesses, large and small alike. Business managers, MBA students/graduates and aspiring business owners must soak up all these and observe how this plays out eventually. I am particularly itching for Twitter’s strategic response to this in terms of customer retention initiatives asides the lawsuit that has supposedly been threatened. I can only imagine how much work is being done by the crisis management team at this time!

Mark Zuckerberg demonstrated ruthlessness sprinkled with a ray of brilliance and has taken the world by storm. Did Elon make a mistake when he refused to listen to push backs from users about billing for verification badges? Perhaps this was a typical arrogance observed with some market leaders and an easy pitfall for many giants. I still think that decision left a lingering distaste with users and has contributed to the overwhelming acceptance that Threads has seen one day into its launch.

In this YouTube video, I dissected a few salient lessons to draw summarized below:

  • Customer is still King! (Elon could have provided a rationale to users, reached a common ground to get customer buy in, then phase the execution of the badge removal)
  • Customers are not loyal! (No matter how perfectly laid out your loyalty plan is, strive to adopt new users in record numbers)
  • Have eyes for opportunities like a hawk! (Regardless of the stage of your business, there is a tremendous chance of expansion still. Copying with improvement is still a valid form of innovation
  • Let continuous product improvement be a part of the very fabric holding your organization together (Improve even without a threat so that when the threat finally happens, the gap between your offering and that of competition is closed significantly)

The entire meta team must be commended for the pockets of genius that I saw with Threads! The fact that you can join that platform as a new user but retain the following from Instagram! So you are starting afresh but not starting from zero! Interesting indeed. The ease of navigation both on the platform and across the platform and Instagram amongst others

I feel bad for Elon but knowing how intentional he is with his businesses, I know this won’t go down without a fight. So I am cheering you on, Elon Musk and the entire twitter team. Would there be policy reversals? Maybe not typical of a giant but what then? what incentives are we to expect? By how much will the team mitigate the impact of this huge hell-hole.

What do you think? What lessons do you see? Have you watched full the video? Looking forward to reading your comments
